Healthy children, youth and
families are essential to the health of the community. Communities
and neighbourhoods need to see that the health and well-being
of youth are their collective responsibility.
The
B.C. Children's Commission Annual Report states that evidence
gathered indicates the pressing need for government, service
provider, and communities to address the issue of offering
accessible recreational and leisure opportunities to youth
in order to maintain the health, safety and well-being of
the province's youth.
Over the past few years youth have been asked
what they need and the resounding theme is that respect goes
both ways; if you want safe and healthy communities, then
adults need to welcome youth by putting a priority on ensuring
they have a voice in finding solutions to community problems,
rather than viewing them as a community problem or burden.
